Gabion

A gabion (from Italian gabbione meaning “big cage”; from Italian gabbia and Latin cavea meaning “cage”) is a cage, cylinder, or box filled with rocks, concrete, or sometimes sand and soil for use in civil engineering, road building, military applications and landscaping. The subtle variation in stone colour, the texture of different rock fillings and the light and shade of stone and crevice.

Zaungabionen is a wire basket or wire form, filled with stones and shaped into a fence or retaining wall type structure. Zaungabionen have become a popular construction material for narrow width free standing walls and fences. For the DIY person it’s quite easy to construct and can look fabulous.
